The Buddha stated that we are not punished for our enger but that anger itself is the punishment. Especially a lingering anger over old (and sooner or later they're all old) grievence. From a medical point of view this can easily be measured by the rise in blood pressure, stress, and toll on the immune system anger places on the body. In terms of emotions anger wreaks havoc on our relationships - even on those who we are not even angry with - anger consumes and once we find ourselves within it's grasp it is all we have to give to others. Sadly. The great promise of spiritual traditions is one of transformation - the alchemy of turning lead to gold, hate to love, anger to compassion and empathy. No one demonstrated this better than Gandhi who transformed his anger at being thrown from a train in South Africa (for being the wrong color)into a compassionate movement that brough the British Empire to its knees. That is a promise fulfilled and it's the promise that is held by and for each of us. The Tantric path of awakening is one of taking our base desire (and anger is the desire to lash outwards at others or inwards upon ourselves)and turning them as fuel to reaching the Divine. In this regard this esoteric path is ours to walk as well. Truly life will give you many and daily opportuniites to realse our anger - how we do so is a choice. Meditation is a great tool in create the inner space that allows us to make a wise and caring choice. Another method is allowing a brief pause before we respond - space is magical and even a moment can transform the lead of our anger into the gold of compassion. Try it.
And lastly - forgiveness.
The gift of allowing others their mistakes and ourselves the failings of the human heart - and seeing more within the offered moment than meets the human eyes. That's forgiveness - and the way to miracles.
