Race Review - Catoctin 50k

It seems Race Director Kevin Sayers makes few promises for Catoctin 50k - tough, brutal and hot are about all you can expect - oh and oddly enough - a good time. And that pretty much sums up the day. So to srart the race review off I want to thank Kevin for going all out in making this tough, brutal, hot day a good time!
It actually wasn't as hot as I thought it might be -or maybe the string of 100 degree plus days had me nicely condition to handle a 95 degree day. Either way they heat was less of a factor than I had feared, although with a race like Cat it certainly was a factor. The forecast had also promised Thunderstaorms leading into the race and this never came to pass as well - very fortunate!
With my friend Matt running with my wife this year I decided to run this race a littel harder, a little faster this year. My secrect plan was I just wanted to be finished and suffer less. Any one who stays on there feet for 9+ hours is an ultra stud(ette) in my book! It's a tough way to spend the day, especially on this course. So my goal was a sub 8:00 and I felt my traiing would reflect well on this effort. My top training week was 70+ miles and with several weeks of double runs thrown in hard kettlebell and bodyweight training. I did a bit less trail work this time around and a little more on the run to focus on speed - I was a little worried about this but figured the 1-2 times a week on the trails plus a few years of near constant trail running would see me through - it was an educated gamble. Matt and Moca looked a bit nervous but I knew they had a strong effort in the. Moca has been nursing a near chronic IT band related issue but has recently been recieving massage therapy (week before race)and we felt this would make a difference and it should even more so in future races.
I started relatively conservative going in-bound (Cat is an out and back course) and soon began to pick up my pace going up the hills (it seems Cat is either going up or going down) and ran many of the hills that common sense told me to walk. I had my fueling and hydration on target so I thought again that it was a gamble I could afford and worse case scenerio I would slog it in for the finsh on dead quads. It sort of happend that way but for different reason that I'll soon get in to. This is a really beautiful trail that carries a runner along nicely - feeling so strong and giving way to the pull of the trail (not to mention fellwo runners and really great aid stations and crews) I was soon at the half-way turn around feeling as (almost) good as I started. Going down the long hill I ran into (not literally) my good friend Melissa and we ran into the turn around together and back up for the long climb. She was hurting with a foot issue from way before this race and was toughing it out like a trooper. She had a great but tough finish too and has all of my respect! On the long climb I soon left Melissa and continued on my own. I was thinking of lw 7:00s at this point and was pretty happy about this - I belive my best mile was 9:47 or so. For me, on this race, that's pretty fast(for the winners - not so much)and doing so on tred legs filled me with even more confidence. On a side note I truely believe two factors made a hugh difference - double runs, training me to run and run fast9er) on tired legs and my diet - which is high raw Vegan. Most of my fueling was fruit during the race and fruit makes up a large (majority) of my daily diet. The enegrgy and recovery this diet gives you really can't be described, only expereinced. I proudly wore my No Meat Athlete tech shirt through the race and was surprised at all the great comments people made and the the No Meat Guy cheers I was recieved!
Okay, it was at this point something had to go wrong and it did. Running with another racer who told me he was local and new the trail well gave me another surge as he was a bit faster than me but not so much that I would lose sight of him and I figured it would keep me on track. Getting lost on Cat (or any ultra)is a constant fear. The trail is well marked but there are several turn-offs that can easily be missed. With a little common sense though you can usually turn this aroun pretty quickly. So much for common sense though - the local runner assured (us both it now seems) that this was the way and that's the way we went. Except I didn't see any blue blazes - on both end of the trail as I was beginning to look back and wonder why no other runners were around - I'm not THAT fast. I gave thr tail a mile (too much time) and then turned around but soon found myself worrying abouty the local runner so I ran after him yelling to turn around. I guess he though this was part of my race stragedy and he wasn't going to fall for it and kept going - even faster. He may still be runnng. So this took my another mile (a bit less) and I turned around and really pounded out the downhill. I was mad at myself and new my sub 8:00 was as good as gone especially with some tough up hills comiing up. And I was near out of water with no more aid stations. Dumb mistake on my part but part of the u;tra game so I begin to plan on salvaging my race with a lot of fun and the best effort I could - it worked and the attitude that everything is always okay (even when it isn't) can get you through some tough, hard times.
I soon ran into some freinds that were surpised to see me coming from behind as I had passed them earlier. Howver nearly (if not all) those who have run Cat know all too well the off race trail excursions and all had encourging words (thanks Judith!) I also ran tinto Melissa again and ran with her for a bit - she really is one tough runner. At this point there was only three hard climbs left and I knew I had the cut-off but a bit and was happy with my effort. I climbed steady but no longer pushed those uphills, saving my quads for the the downs. Hitting the pavement to head back to the Tea Room I though my race was done - how could I forget the short but brutal climb to the finish? I don't know but I did and I plan on forgetting it again as soon I'm able! Worst climb of the day! Absolutely miserable! Ughhhh! But I did it. And the race was done at 8:43 for me. Not my desired goal but I'm very happy with it - I ran a strong, fast race and left it all on the course - if not for a mistake I would have met the goal and more (at mile 32 my Garmin said 7:17) and mistakes really only add to the adventure of the run. They happen, no sweat (ok - poor choice of words. There was lots of sweat.)
Judith soon brought it in (congratulations) and Melissa not long after. Great effort you guys and a fantastic race!
Moca and Matt were at the finish line to cheer me in. I saw them at the turn around and they were running strong but even more impressive - they were running happy. That attitde makes a great difference in a long race. Unfortunetly they had to drop at the turn around due to the cut off - but not by much and now that Moca has her IT issues addressed and Matt has some Cat expereince next year is there year. That's a promise.
I had planned on a beer to celebrate - first one in 12 years. But with the lack of water for the last 8+ miles I was pretty dehydrated so it wil have to wait until the Stone Mill 50 miler race in November. It will give me something to train for!
A big thank you to Kevin Sayer for a first class race and all those volunteers who faced the heat and gave their support. You guy make all the difference and I appreciate the "No Meat Guy" cheers!
This is not an easy ultra, for anyone, beginners to veterns alike. And it doesn't get easier with return visit as a view of finishing times year by year shows. However I do have plans for a faster Cat next year and half the fun is in the training and the other half in the effort. As can be seen from previous post I started thinking about this race the minute after dropping half-way last year. It was that important to me and it will be again next year. I hope to see some of you guys out there next time!
Thanks for reading,
Eric

Race day tomorrow. I feel ready but everything and anything can change on a 95 degree day in the mountains with over 30 miles to your front and 9 hours to get. Brings to mind the Hindu proverb of "How do you eat an elephant?"
One bite at a time.
8:00 tomorrow comes the first bite.

Training for Today and CAT50K Thoughts (yes more)

1. Jerk set- @22kgs 3:00
2. Swings- @24kg 3x20
3. Pushups - 60 (2:30)
4. Plank- 1:00

~
No running today - thought a rest day after the tempo run and jerks today would do me better than an actual run would. Easy 3 tomorrow and then off Friday. Then it's race day. A little voice in the back of my mind is urging me to try and break 8 hours - which is no easy feat for Catoctin. Matt and Moca seem fine in my solo run but it's definitely rewarding to play a part in anothers accomplishment and Moca dropped from this last year and both her and Matt have a real shot at making it this year - the training is there and now it's mind that will accomplish the rest, So I'm still undecided.

Friday will be some l;ight bodyweight stuff snd I'll run a couple of miles tomorrow and Thursday (leaving Thursday as an optinal rest day as well)I'm starting to feel a little stronger and more recovered so there's some reason for optimism!

Group Runs and Races (the why)

I'm solitairy by nature and most of my activities reflect this quite clearly - meditating, writing, kettlbell training and long distace running are all things that are often done solo and just as often require a reflective attitude and personality. And yet running is a funny twist to this - we run long miles in the company of our minds and sometimes even become monk like in our early morning training and routines. But still we are drwan towards others - races, group runs or a few friends to pass the miles with in laughter and conversation. These runs are just, if not more so, important to me as my solo quest for distance. Running with my friends or racing with others (not against but with)draws me towards a recognition that there is no such thing as alone - only lonliness in the lack of this awareness.
So thank you to those who gather at races.
And thank you to my friends who match
my stride.
You are why I run.

Peace,
Eric

Weekend Training and Thoughts on CAT50k

Saturday
1. Run - trail 6.5

Sunday
1. Run Trail 4.0
2. Long cycle -@22kgs 3:00
3. Pushups -50 reps
4. Plank - 1:00

~
Have to regroup from a not too successful training run on CAT Saturday - the race is still doable for us all but a re-commitment of faith in training and a full embrace of discomfort will definitely be in order. This is a rough, hard trail and to run it even partial is amazing let alone 31. The key is (as says the title of the book0 Relentless, Forward, Progress - we don't have to move fast - just steady and with purpose. It's the purpose we often (especially on hills) forget. This is wear the person in front of you helps - beat that person, just that one, can become all important and add momentum (purpose) to our steps. As we pass we can wish that person well and urge them forward too - it's our turn to be the rabbit. Miles can pass quickly in this fashion and a race can prove successful even in the grip of what may seem defeat. And if for some reason we must drop - we can hope our efforts have enabled success for our fellow runners, we have given a piece of ourselves to the trail and effort, and we have enjoyed the company of other fine runners and the beauty of our surroundings. That's the big Picture.

Guidance From a Likely Source

Ask for guidance.
Wake up each morning and ask to be guided towards peace, love and a forgiving attitude when our steps stray from this path or we fail to heed this inner voice.
A Course in Miracles urges us to turn to the Holy Spirit and seek its council through our day. The Holy Spirit (in this regard) can be thought of as our direct link from God to us - a link only needed in recognition to what we have forgotten. We are at once at home with God and projected here as an illusion of separation. The Holy Spirit is the voice that calls us home. When we ask for guidance we are in turn asking for a homeward taste of heaven in a brief moment of a crisis in identity. We have simply forgotten our kingdom within. Of course this is terminology - Holy Spirit is a force of no name that extends from God to us all - call it what you will - yet call it just the same to reach its comfort.

peace,
Eric

Training for today and training thoughts

1. one arm press-@20kg 5x(1/2/3/4/5)
2. pullups- 20 reps 3:11
3. Snatch -@16kg 6:00 51/51

~
Time to re-evaluate all the pressing. I may keep them in twice a week (light/heavy) and only work up to 3 rungs (1/2/3) for 5 or more ladders. A bit more strength and a little less volume. Next week will be relatively light lifting wise and nothing but easy runs (except midweek tempo for 3-4 miles to keep leg turnover high.) So far the weather wise I'm hearing 98 on one end and 94 on another. I choose 94 (or less) if I get a choice. Plenty of time out for things to change and if not we'll run in the heat. That's life on the trail (and the road)

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Training for today

1. long cycle-@20kgs 7:00 30 reps
2. plank- 1:00
3. run - trail 4.90 (Trail Gloves)

~
Short and simple today but definitely not easy with the heat. Need more recovery time and will need to keep the weight on the light side next week. I'm not feeling very tapered.

For Emily

A special mention in todays blog to Emilly Kersetter - Emily is a courageous 17 year old girl who has demonstrated grace, heart, healing and forgiveness in her incredible journey to recovery after a senseless act of voilence more than a year ago. Emily offers something very rare - the innocence, sweetness and beauty of a 17 year girl who - while affected by this brutaltiy - has refused to let it define her. She is as sweet now as she was before her injury. Yes, there are inner scars as well as outer - yet these only add to the beauty of her being. She has much to teach us and we have much to learn.
Today Emily took her first steps that beared the weight on not just an injured leg, but as well as the weight we all must bear in trying times. Emily walks tall, with grace and beauty and I privledged to walk a bit beside her her.
Thank you Emily.

Anger

The Buddha stated that we are not punished for our enger but that anger itself is the punishment. Especially a lingering anger over old (and sooner or later they're all old) grievence. From a medical point of view this can easily be measured by the rise in blood pressure, stress, and toll on the immune system anger places on the body. In terms of emotions anger wreaks havoc on our relationships - even on those who we are not even angry with - anger consumes and once we find ourselves within it's grasp it is all we have to give to others. Sadly. The great promise of spiritual traditions is one of transformation - the alchemy of turning lead to gold, hate to love, anger to compassion and empathy. No one demonstrated this better than Gandhi who transformed his anger at being thrown from a train in South Africa (for being the wrong color)into a compassionate movement that brough the British Empire to its knees. That is a promise fulfilled and it's the promise that is held by and for each of us. The Tantric path of awakening is one of taking our base desire (and anger is the desire to lash outwards at others or inwards upon ourselves)and turning them as fuel to reaching the Divine. In this regard this esoteric path is ours to walk as well. Truly life will give you many and daily opportuniites to realse our anger - how we do so is a choice. Meditation is a great tool in create the inner space that allows us to make a wise and caring choice. Another method is allowing a brief pause before we respond - space is magical and even a moment can transform the lead of our anger into the gold of compassion. Try it.
And lastly - forgiveness.
The gift of allowing others their mistakes and ourselves the failings of the human heart - and seeing more within the offered moment than meets the human eyes. That's forgiveness - and the way to miracles.

Training for Today and Some Weather Thoughts

1. Long cycle -@22kgs 5:00
2. Alternating lunges -2x20
3. Pushups - 3x20
4. Plank -1:00
4. Run - bilke path -7:35 (Bikilas LS)

~
Hot day and took its toll on both Melissa and I and our pace slowed considerably near the end. Good heat training and from the looks of things we're going to need it as the latest (in an ever changing forecast)is 98 and humid on race fun. Throw in the mountains and and 31 miles and we're in for a party. Fun times (and I kinda mean that)

Todays Workout and Thoughts on Tempo Run

Training for today -

1. Long cycle -@20kgs 7:00 28 reps
2. Pushups -2x25
3. Plank -1;00
4. Run - bike path 5.14

~

1 mile warm up/3 mile tempo/1 mile cool down.

~
Renewed tempo works began today and I'll carry it right on up (and beyond) to Baltimore marathon and Stonemill 50 mile. The plan (as always tenative and subject to change)is to have a tempo run as one of three focused runs during the week - with the long run, and second day semi long run the other two. I would like to work up to 13+ miles (18 even better) at my tempo pace. Preparing for MD Half-marathon I would work up to 8+ (10+ once)tempo runs and ran a pretty decent race that day. It's a fun workout as you're just on the cusp of an all out effort but with enough sense to keep from stepping over. It really is a workout designed to get one comfortable with discomfort. Sounds fun right?

Light

I mediate better in a clean, clear room (note - it's not always clear.) My writing flows better when my desk is organized. When I take care of my recovery - running is a joy and brings me greater peace of mind. There is a commom thread here - I (try) to surround myself with conditions that will make my life (and activities) easier.
It's the same with people.
Happiness is contagious.
Be the person who spreads joy - and bless those who seem without. Do not allow yourself to fall under their shadow (yes, it is our shadow as well) be the light in which they may see - even if only from a distance.

Peace,
Eric

Training for today

4. planks - 1:20
5. run - bike path 2.63 (Bikilas LS)

~
Pretty easy day today - which was great as I'm feeling that 12;00 set of Long Cycle from yesterday! I have to keep reminding myself that lifting is part of the paering and train accordingly. No sense cutting the mialge and still going into the hills of CAT with tired legs from lifting.

Weekend Training and Shoe Thoughts

Saturday -
1. Run - trail 15.80 (Trail Gloves)

Sunday-
1. Run - trail 5.80 (Trail Gloves)
2. Long cycle -@16kgs 12:00 71 reps
3. Pushups -3x20

~
Finished the week off with a bit over 40 miles total - quite a drop from the 70+ last week but felt like I needed it. I may shoot for a bit more this week and then a final week to taper fully. Shoes are becoming an issue of concern right now as I'm not sure that the Trail Gloves will be the best option for CAT. I'm thinking that the NB101's may be the better option as they're still minimal but offer a bit more protection. If I can make it out to CAT once before the race I'll have a better perspective on shoes. Funny enough last year I raced in La Sportiva Cross Lites as I thought the 101's might be to minimal for CAT. Times (and feet) have changed.

Promises

The self created pressure of a blog is to write something meaningful on a regular basis. I write daily and sometimes it's "blog worthy" and most often it isn't - but everyday at a given time (self appointed daily)I write. And everyday I'm better for it - I have fulfilled a promise made only with my self and those are often the hardest to keep and easiest to negotiate with. Meditation is another daily must - as is some form of exercise (maybe I'm a bit extreme with the exercise)
Here's my question(s) -
What promise have you made to
yourself?
And do you keep it?

Peace,
Eric

Training for today

1. Long cycle -@16kgs 10:00 70 reps
2. Pushups -3x20
3. Plank -:30
4. Run - 6.25 trail (Trail Gloves)

~
Heavy legs all through the week and even today didn't feel great. Tomorrows a rest day of sorts and that should bring up to par. Satudays long run will be a nice, easy paced 15 miles on the trail and that should tell me a lot about how ready we all are for CAT.

Training for today

1. Jerk set -@22kgs 4:00
2. Swings -@24kg 5x10 915 secs between sets)
3. Pullups/close grip chins -5/5
4. Plank -1:00
5. Run -5.70 bike path (Bikilas LS)

~
Hoping for a 7+ run tomorrow to top out this part of the week at 20 - feel like I really needed this step down and should come back by this weekend to stronger, fresher legs. Of course the jerk set may not really help in that regard but we'll see.

Seven Months

Seven months ago on this day - my mother passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's. I think of her daily, feel her presence with both joy and sadness through moments of my day. We lost her in stages, the illness robbing her of self and her self from family. I'll never overcome this feeling of loss and tragic ending - but it will merge with the greater sense of love, patience and forgivness she has left with me. That is her true legacy - a teacher to the end and still beyond.
Thank you Mom.
I love you.

Beat.
Early taper seems the smart move right now and more trail time as well. But that's pretty much how I want to feel right now with plenty of time to recover and have frssh, strong legs on race day. I suck at tapering by the way - but I'm doing my best for CAT!

2.Pullups/close grip chins -8/5
3. Swings -@28kg 5:00 75 reps
4. Plank -1:00
5. Run -3.15 bile path (barefoot)

~
After a big weekend and bigger week (volume wise) I'm ready to start reducing the load a bit leading (three weeks) into the race. Originally I was going to do one more long run of 20+ but I'm not sure it would be worth it- la least any more so than a 15 miler which would help my legs regain their zing (technical term.)

Weekend Training

Training through the weekend.
Saturday -
1. Run - bike path/trails 21.10

Sunday -
1. Run - trail 8.16

Pm
1. Long cycle -@22kgs 4:00
2. Goblet squat -@12kg 2x10
3. Pushups -2x20
4. Run -4.21

FInihsing the week off with 70+ miles and feeling pretty strong. A few little issues that seem to come with the territory (right heel mostly) but over all surprisingly strong and fit. Nice run through the hills with Matt and Randy this morning and it seems my trail legs are coming back as well. This week will be a reduction in over all volume as well as the long run (15 miles or so) and I should be going into CAT with prettty fresh and strong legs. Looking for ways to help my wife address her IT band issues as that seesm to be the limiting factor for her covering distance right now. Send along any suggestions and we would both appreciate it!
Thanks,
Eric

Training for today and some training thoughts

Training for today -
Friday

1.One arm clean&press -@20kg 5x(1/2/3)
2.Pullups/close grip chins – 9/6
3.Snatch -@16kg 4:00 61 reps
4.Plank/fit ball crunch -1:00/20

As I remembered the ladders eat up a lot of time - not sure how long I'll include them in this fashon. I may switch to twice a week double ladders Coach Dan Johns style - which is 2/3/5/8 for a total of 20 reps per ladders. Hit that 5 times and there's 100 reps. Tough volume but speedier. Another option is to drop the medium day and just press twice a week with long cycle making up the bulk of lifting. The plus side here is the time it saves to include a bit more leg work, longer runs, or something along the lines of get-ups or windmills. I'll give this all some thought over the weekend. And speaking of volume - Saturday and Sunday will be the last of the heavy volume for this training cycle. I'm looking forward to gaining a bit more fire back into my legs!

Training Log and Shoe Thoughts

1. Long Cycle- @16kgs 9:00 62 reps
2. Get ups- @22kg 5:00 (switch on min)
3. Pushups-2x20
4. Plank - 1:00
5. Run - bike path - 6.05 (Bikilas LS)

pm
1. Run - 4.03 road (Bikilas/barefoot)

~
Okay, made it to 36+ for the week so far with my long run and a possible double (maybe the last double before race) to go. Feeling pretty strong (and tired) and hit a 7:40 pace for my second mile of my double today. I should top the 66 miles I hit last week with a good shot of getting 70 for my last volume week.
The big question I'm asking myself is shoes for Catoctin. I'm tempted to go with the Merrells which have gotten me through a trail half marathon, 2 50ks and a trail marathon. But CAT is a different beast and I only have one shot to get the shoes right. Second choice is New Balance 101's and oddly enough I elected to wear my La Sportiva Cross Lights last years as I though the 101's would be too minimal. What a difference a year worth of training makes huh? If possible I'll take a training run in the Merrels and let that be the deciding factor - if I can't make it out there I may opt for safety and wear the NB. Stay tuned!

The Power of Doing Things Right

Almost skipped my double today - heavy legs and general fatuige but a 20 minute power nap, Eight bananas, and a (very) large green salad with apples, peppers, carrots and cabbage seem to do the trick to get me back out for another couple of miles. This is the last high volume week so I really want to push through and see it through for as close to 70 as I can get. A little episode like this though does illustrate the issues of proper fuel and hydration as I was a little under on both counts. Calories count. Quality calories count even more so (and junk calories put us under even more) and hydration is a constant - especially on these humid days and hard training.
Thanks for reading!

Food Confession

I'm a little sorry to say that I have allowed a little vegan processed food to creep into my diet as of late. The vast majority of calories come from fruit, vegetables and a bit of whole grains but lately I've slipped in things like a Boca Burger on an Ezikial roll or even the occasional Tofurky pizza (taste very good by the way.) In the big picture this is fairly minor but it does make for less than optimal diet - especially training wise. Right now I freely admit that I'm going to be somewhat lax and then begin to work to get myself back on track. Confession is good for the soul so I bared mine - food wise at least.

Take care!
Eric

Let Go

To let go - and still again in the faith that things help our always temporary in their lasting. It's the promise of new beginning that have yet to take hold but with each letting go become a bit more clear in their completion. The clear void that waits on the other side of forgiveness is that very promise and ours to embrace or deny in a single thought of its importance. To embrace is to open in spirit and becoming and to deny is ego welcomed in a home of separation.
Our choice.

Opted for 8 stright up today instead of a double run - legs are a bit fried from this weekend. Thinking of pounding the volume this week (70+ if I'm able) and next week begin to tamper in volume but up the last long run by just a bit - maybe 24 or so. We'll see how the wek progresses and go from there.

Continue

And again let go.
And endless still each moment begs forgivness.
And again let go.
And so our lives continue in this stream of
slights against the ego.
Yet every stream becomes an
ocean.
Continue on your way.
