Starting to Understand

Starting to understand: 

I don't know what anything is for, such a hard admission offered by lesson 25 of A Course in Miracles, confronting that almost everything in my life has been the focus of ego's demands. Especially my most cherished relationships. This lesson strips me to the spiritual bone, forcing an honest look upon the meaning I've assigned everything in my life. So I've been stuck on lesson 25 for the past few decades of my study, but at least knowing that I don't know...

but now,

I'm starting to understand.

everything is holy, serving only this particular purpose, 

only love is real.

and you're now showing me the way.

I don't Understand

I don't understand: 

again lesson 25 of A Course in Miracles is my great surrender, admitting to myself, again and again it seems, that I truly don't know what anything is for, and yet I continue to cherish the things that have so little value to me. Of course this is just a lure offered by the ego, still promising me that one more shiny thing of the world will bring me true and lasting peace of mind. 

and I still believe it, even after a lifetime of false promises that only brought me pain. I still grab that shiny lure and allow the ego to drag me in again. But there is a difference now, a gentle smile plays in my heart when I admit that I don't know what anything is for, and then instantly surrender every lure and false promise over to a greater understanding than my own. 

I don't know what anything is for -

and I don't have to.

as purpose for everything will be revealed when I really need to know.

and I finally remember to ask...

to truly understand.

As to Understand

As to understand: 

imagine this, just a wish to understand others more than our own desire to explain ourselves, surrendering our need to be right in order to simply be kind. That's the possibility that this particular line represents, asking that we not so much seek to be understood as to understand. Yes, a tall order indeed, but this is a prayer that humbles, making these words truly a living energy that work their magic through us. Of course this doesn't mean that we don't have our own convictions, or that we abandon our own beliefs for the sake of someone else's understanding.

we only ask for the ability to listen,

fully and deeply so.

allowing others to be heard. 

in order to understand anyone our minds must be open, we should be able to offer a giving space of heart-centered compassion where others can be understood. It's a true gift, pure, and it can only be offered when we let go of our own insistent need to always be certain in our view. Again this shouldn't imply that our opinions aren't valid, only that for a moment, briefly even, we just let them be and offer ourselves as a listening place. This is where transformation happens, friendships occur, and long held resentments begin to disappear. It's magical, truly so, based entirely on a single line of kindness...

may I seek less to be understood,

as to understand.

if only for a moment.
