Self-Inquiry

Self-inquiry:

and so really, A Course in Miracles is the deep practice of jhana, the yoga of self-inquiry, but with a bit of a twist to this ancient practice. In traditional jhana we might ask the question "who am I?" in a curious and persistent fashion, allowing silence to eventually supply our sought out answer. The Course asks us to rely upon out internal teacher, the Holy Spirit, to reinterpret the world through our inquiry - we ask 'what is this for?" and the Holy Spirit has the single reply:

salvation.

all inquiry ends with a revaluation, we're shown the soft shine of holiness that resides beneath the surface of the world, our innocence is revealed through the practice of forgiveness, and we know exactly what everything is for - we are here in service of salvation. That's it.

everything serves to bring us home.

Overlook

Overlook:

Chapter 9 of A Course in Miracles tells us the secret, directly so, and it's marvelously freeing, blissful really, even as it causes us such a great deal of distress. Here's the directive, simple in both language and decree - to forgive is to overlook. That's it, five words to freedom and it's the very last thing we ever want to do. Jesus tells us in the Course that we perceive sin over error, preferring our stories of maliciousness and attack instead of the truth of who we are. And that's the crux, our projections laid bare, our own judgement's imprison us behind bars of perception.

we don't want to be free...we want to be right.

yet Jesus says,

accept as true only what your brother is, if you would know yourself.

and so we overlook perception to see reality, escaping from a small darkened room to a light-filled to rediscover the beauty of the natural world. This isn't bypassing any hurt or harm caused by another, it's not overlooking the need for our own safety - it's forgiveness for our salvation. While we overlook the sins of the body in order to experience the freedom of reality, our true sense of being pure and sinless, we also honor the place we find ourselves in our perception. The Holy Spirit meets us where we are at every moment, making no demands, and never asking us to be in harms way. We're only ever asked for just a little willingness to see with Christ's vision...

letting go of every story,

to overlook,

and truly know the beauty of the world.

that's our salvation.

right now.

exactly where we are.

Salvation

Salvation:

so at this point I'm becoming one pointed in my one goal, truly focused now, with no more distractions allowed. Lesson 99 of A Course in Miracles reminds me that salvation is my only function here, and that this is achieved through the practice of forgiveness, in fact, they're one and the same. The Course explains that salvation is undoing the appearance of separation, it's correcting the error of illusions and seeing the reality of light shine through. We're light-bearers, all of us, our torch is forgiveness. I've always loved the radical nature of this plan, how salvation isn't earned by performing good deeds - but through our unwavering commitment to seeing others in their original innocence.

of course this is really how we save ourselves

as ultimately,there are no others.

Salvation

Salvation:

this is my time of year, a stretch of joy from this first day of spring all the way to the weeks of June that bring the deepest shades of life and green. I love watching the first hint of bud that later blossoms fully in the summer, seeing the return of migrant birds that will nest here for some time. It's my season of renewal, feeling deserved after the length of winter.

this is my season of salvation.

from my earliest years Easter has been a favorite holiday. Not holding the glitter of Christmas, but having a more subtle light that somehow seemed to offer me even more, something holier. I felt Easter deeply back then, believing that it held a promise for me, a true resurrection, even miracles. Later, a harder life seemed to rob me of such easy joy. My beliefs hardened against such a promise and I only craved the actuality of experience, things that I could hold in my hands, and ideas that instantly brought into action the pursuit of all my demands.

I had little time to entertain thoughts of salvation.

but of course the seeds were already planted, those early buds of an internal spring were nourished by a spiritual curiosity. Easter was always my promise. Yet ego circumvents the journey back to the heart, with even a spiritual path being a long curve that only seems to lead astray. It took me a little while to arrive here, right here, surprisingly...right here.

all along, my objective was to simply be kind.

to forgive and be gentle.

just allowing salvation to unfold completely on it's own.

as promised.

and right now...it's spring.

My Salvation

My salvation:

to what extent am I able to surrender? That's my question now as I consider lesson 194 of A Course in Miracles, being asked to place the future in God's hands and not to worry of my own salvation. Here, I should add that the Course is not addressing a future event where my soul is saved. What's meant by salvation is that all of my illusions that act as barriers to the reality of love's presence are laid aside and my life is then lived in the actually of experience.

only love is real.

and that is my surrender.

so what I'm asked to do, all that's ever truly asked - is to be kind, purposefully choosing a higher teacher than the demands of ego, and trusting in the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit. Salvation will be handled on its own, and none of the metaphysics of the Course even need to be considered.

just be kind.

with no exceptions.

and that alone is my true salvation.
