Every Loving Thought Matters

Every loving thought matters:

so we have an underlying function in life, a true world agenda in which we quietly forgive the illusion of believing the we are somehow separated from the mind of God, adrift and without connection to each other. Our purpose here is to heal the wound of this apparent separation.

and so our every loving thought matters.

forgiveness being vital.

after all...we have a function to fulfill.

Ask

Ask:

and what if the purpose is to heal,or that anything that seems to provoke us is simply an unrecognized call for love? Our own interpretation is always wrong, and this is true only because the ego thrives in it's reactions, an illusion given a purpose of defending its existence. So it's here that we ask for a miracle, a reinterpretation of an event or person as seen through the light of the Holy Spirit. This may be well after any hurt that's occurred, maybe even years later, and yet time itself is meaningless to our own peace of mind. Ask for the miracle now, the moment that we're ready, be patient, quiet...ready to receive.

our request is always answered.

forgive.

and then see the world a different way.

Bless the World

Bless the world:

and with our holiness now known it becomes our only function to bless the world. We have rediscovered our ancient truth, being holier than ever dreamed, awakening to the reality of God. So know our role is to continue to recognize this about ourselves through the appearance of others, that we look past the surface stories of our hurt and wounds and see each soul struggling to be known.

our only function here is to silently,

lovingly,

greet this struggle gently.

and continue blessing all the world.

with no exceptions possible.

Everything We See

Everything we see:

and as established previously, our mind is part of God's and we are very holy, indeed - with this realization comes a new vision of the world, enveloping everything we see through the holiness of our love. This is the true resurrection, a rebirth of those condemned by the judgments we once cast. And most importantly this includes our own reflection.

we know ourselves truly now.

holy.

and this envelopes everything we see.

Very Holy Indeed

Very holy indeed: :

we're talking at the deepest level here, beyond what can even be conceptualized, and yet at this exact moment remains true - our mind is part of God's and we are very holy. That's the secret revealed just over a month into the workbook lessons of A Course in Miracles, and now we're asked to practice it, dismissing each label and every concept that occurs to us as we contemplate our true nature. We're not asked to believe it, not yet. and honestly, 30 plus years into living the Course and I still often have doubts about my own holiness. Our only role is to continuously bring this in mind through the practice of forgiveness, requesting the Holy Spirit show us who we are in the moments that offer us the most concern. Our mind is part of God's, and in truth, there is no need for forgiveness.

we are very holy,

indeed.

and this is what we ask to see.

A Light Sines Through

A light shines through:

because God is in my mind - there's the answer to all of my problems, and that once experienced, even briefly, then everything becomes an object of my forgiveness. If God is in my mind than what I perceive must be holy, and if it doesn't appear to be so, or if I am confronted by anything that seems to confirm otherwise, than I have surely misinterpreted what it shows me.

that's the continuous lesson of forgiveness.

this isn't denial, nor is it bypassing anything that occurs - it's simply looking deeper, beyond perceptions and the stories being told by ego, and asking for another way to see the world. Maybe I'm not ready to see things differently, not yet at least, and that's okay, really, there's no demands being made. But I ask anyway, trusting that my own divine presence will eventually show me the light that shines through my every false perception. As I practice, and life always provides me opportunities to practice - more easily, and with a quicker grace now...

a light shines through.

always.

A Kinder World

A kinder world:

through not bypassing a single dark thought or emotion, being attentive to our own distress and watchful of their projections - slowly, slowly, we now begin to perceive a different world. Nothing is outside our point of view, there is only the landscape of the mind, and what's seen is our creation. So it's our responsibility to change it. This is where the word begins, owning our creation by shifting the thoughts offered by the shadows of ego towards the light of the Holy Spirit.

it's a very simple plan.

examine the world caused by thought system.

and then choose a different one.

as often as needed.

until we see a kinder world.

Ever Closer

Ever closer:

throughout A Course in Miracles there is theme that calls me to surrender only to the will of God. It's taken me over thirty years to hear clearly, or at discern it as a separate call from ego's demands for my security and well-being. I am entering a place of trust now, closer to the edge of this surrender, but not quite without the weight of fear still pulling me downward. Yet each morning my days begins with gratitude and the intent that today...

I will make no decisions on my own.

trusting wholly in God's will.

and inching ever closer to the edge of my surrender.

For the Appearance of the World

For the appearance of the world:

it's so subtle that even after almost half a lifetime of practice I still fall victim to the world I see. There seems to be a gravitational pull towards this belief system, how external affairs shape my experiences, and how little concern is given to my internal world. Yet A Course in Miracles continuously reminds me that I am not a victim at all, indeed, that I am the actual creator of the word of my experience and it's entirely up to me to change it.

but only if I'm aware that this is so.

what I'm asked to do is to make a shift, to reverse that gravitational pull towards outer conditions and simply begin to examine my thoughts and the belief system that keeps me bound within the suffering of an external world that holds me as a victim. That's all, to just be aware, even briefly, that my thoughts contribute to the world's creation.

and then practice letting those thoughts go...

forgiving myself,

for the appearance of the world.

while loving my way towards a new one.

Light

Light:

there's an underlying light in everything I see, an illumination of the mind of God that shines even through my false perceptions of the world. My only real purpose here is to see, an easy enough task when I behold a flower or a child's smile. And yet everything shares this light, it isn't absent from anyone or thing, and not seeing this means that I have only hid them further in the darkness of my own mind.

above all else I wish to see.

and this has become my greatest prayer.

Smiling As We Practice

Smiling while we practice:

so A Course in Miracles tells us that anger is never justified, a difficult, yet critical thought for us to understand. This in no way means bypassing anger, nor suppressing it, but to simply acknowledge it as an inner response to a misinterpretation of an outer situation. With acknowledgement we than offer it to the Holy Spirit for correction, a reinterpretation in the light of a more loving intelligence. What's profound about this idea is that our lives now move from the yoga mat and meditation cushion to a continuous practice of mindfulness, that our every interaction becomes a transcendental moment, a tantric expression of the lowest emotional patterns transformed to a greater understanding. This should be a very gentle practice, with a great deal of tenderness and care applied to the process.

we are quite literally asking the Holy Spirit to help us heal the world.

one mindful moment at a time.

so be patient,

kind,

smiling while we practice.

To See

To see:

with growing determination I ask to see, not solely with my eyes, but with what A Course in Miracles calls Christ's vision, a deeper evaluation of all that's seen. This is finally looking at the world through the lens of forgiveness, recognizing the innocence of everything before a single story has been told. My perception is made by either ego or Holy Spirit, and it's not a choice until there's a realization that I have falsely judged the world by virtue of my every false belief.

above all else I want to see.

and now this statement really comes across as prayer, heartfelt in it's sincerity. Tolerance for pain is indeed high, but I have reached my limit, and I am determined to forgive until the entire world is cleansed of my every misperception.

above all else I want to see things differently.

until only God is in everything I see,

a sincere prayer...

answered.

My Small and Personal World

My small and personal world:

towards the end of A Course in Miracles, a small section in the Teachers Manual, there's a lovely description of the ending of the world. Not surprisingly to those familiar with the Course it's a soft and gentle conclusion of the world's purpose, that all has been forgiven and now easily laid aside. I often think of my own small and personal world and how so many lessons continue to appear, how far away a gentle conclusion seems to be.

I sometimes wonder what I'm doing wrong.

and of course that's not just the lesson, it's the classroom itself, and the ending of my smaller world, and the larger world as well - is always and only just a forgiving thought away. In fact, it's my sadness and disappointment with myself that needs the most  understanding. A greater healing isn't possible until my own wounds are tended and cared for, and it's this self-healing, tenderness, that is then extended to the world. I am my own classroom, presenting myself lessons that continually appear not to torment, but to finally learn to let every little bit of fear go...

and give love to my small and personal world.

Truly Helpful

Truly helpful:

for me, it's the most beautiful prayer, meaningful, and brings me right back to my only true purpose in the world. In chapter four of a Course in Miracles we are reminded that we are here to be truly helpful, representing God and not our own personal motives. This doesn't mean that we deny ourselves any comfort, we're not required to be monks and give up anything we now cherish. What we're asked to do is to look deeper into those things and people we value and use them solely as a means of awakening, using our every relationship as a transformative opportunity to extend ourselves as love. And really, this is easier, far simpler, than it might seem, as the prayer then tells us that we will be directed in our every word and deed, becoming an instrument of healing and peace.

at this point in life, more so than ever before...

²I am here only to be truly helpful.
³I am here to represent Him Who sent me.
⁴I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do, because He Who sent me will direct me.
⁵I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me.
⁶I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal. (ACIM, T-2.V-A.18:2-6

and for this I pray.

Conflict

Conflict:

it's a time of conflict, inevitably so, and sadly, and entirely due to the divisive thoughts we offer to the world. We are all responsible for this, each harbored idea of warfare, against ourselves as well as others, has trapped us in a very fearful world of our own design. This conflict is of our making, a projection of an internal war that's been going on. There's a beautiful line from the teachers manual in A Course in Miracles that tells us that war is inevitable to those who look on war. And that always seems our first response, immediately, that our every conflict is solved with even greater warfare. It's not surprising, as we seldom feel safe within our own minds let alone the outer world.

but it's time to heal.

right now.

and again, peace, just like war, is a condition of the mind. More so, and much easier to realize, it's our natural state, a restful awareness of our true innocence, completely free of conflict. Yes, this sounds impossible, and that's why it's handled by continuously requesting a miracle. From the perspective of A Course in Miracles, this is our birthright, and it's simply a determination that we can, indeed, see the world differently, and to due so only requires a shift of mind. That's the miracle, just another thought that offers peace instead of war, a cultivated inner landscape that recognizes love as it's only true condition. It's really not so hard, and more of a return to an already present state of mind. We only have to practice, and first, we need to see that the stakes are very high.

the world depends on us.

you.

me.

and the peaceful thoughts we offer.

Impossible Task

Impossible task:

it's that judging is an impossible task for the ego to perform, an obvious fact when explored sincerely, and being completely honest  with ourselves. Of course that's not easy for us to do at all, as we are quite literally addicted to our every point of view. As well, without a steady examination through the mind, practicing self inquiry, we never truly see the incomplete nature of our judgement's, how little we can truly know of any person or situation.

we are always biased in our view.

without even knowing it.

and so we have a world that's sharply divided by our judgement's, enemies of varying degrees, with even friends arranged in some particular order. What we're asked to do, according to A Course in Miracles, is to relinquish our judgement's by simply recognizing how often they play through the mind, being aware of the sharpness of their division. What we give up is the false belief that it's the ego which keeps us safe and that without it's safety net of judgement we would be at the mercy of an evil world. The truth is that it's impossible for the ego to accurately judge anything, and it only hurts when we believe the false and incomplete information that has been gathered. There's a much easier, a safer, way to navigate through the world - and that's giving this task to the Holy Spirit, a higher intelligence that always sees a complete and honest of every situation. This intelligence sees through every illusion, and guides us to the safety of our loving understanding -without fail.

here's the practice:

recognize our judgement's, gently, and with no added condemnation.

surrender each one to the Holy Spirit.

ask to see beyond illusions.

forgive them all.

it's how we heal the world.

What I truly Mourn

What I truly mourn:

what I mourn is a lost capacity to love, that any tragic loss brings an end to the possibility of a change of heart, an epiphany that turns us towards an inner source of true connection. This is the end result of all violence, it's the closing of every heart that chose a side and made anyone an enemy. I mourn not just the loss of life, but even more so, that it's harder now to heal. I'm afraid that a line has been drawn that now defines us, with neither side able to hear that quiet voice of love.

there's one less possibility for a change of heart.

and that is what I truly mourn.

Until We're Healed

Until we're healed:

atonement is a heavy term to across to in A Course in Miracles, carrying the weight of centuries of religious meaning. Yet as in all things, the Course is very different. Here, we contrast the ritual of sin, sacrifice. and judgment to the gentle approach of simply correcting our perceptions of others, clearly seeing ourselves and who we truly are, and then offering this vision to the world. The atonement is pure forgiveness, it's truth, a Zen moment of awakening that continuously places us directly in the present moment. My only role, my purpose here, is to accept the atonement for myself, deeply looking into my own innocent nature...and then reflect it back to you.

over and over.

until we're healed.

all of us.

I Get It

I get it:

over a year ago I felt compelled to deepen my commitment to living the teachings of A Course in Miracles, that it was time for a full surrender to the practice of forgiveness. There seems to be something in the air right now, a subtle sense that danger looms and that we are helpless to prevent its quickening approach. As well, my personal life collapsed in many ways this year and I was left emotionally groundless, fearful of whatever loss might come next.

years ago I  once came across a story about William Thetford, co-scribe of the Course, and how once retired from his prominent position at Columbia University he settled into what he called his his "real job"of full time forgiveness, a declaration that baffled many of his friends and former co-workers. I love that story, but didn't quite get it at the time, thinking it was no more than a clever line to describe practicing the Course.

I get it now.

and although I certainly don't feel up to the job at hand, most especially as a full time job, I also don't believe that there is any other option. A great quote from spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle sums this up, not nicely, but with a great sense of urgency - "evolve or die" And so here we are, collectively, with a precipice before us and we must decide.

do we evolve?

or perish?

of course that's way too much for me to handle, the weight of spiritual evolution is too far above my pay grade. So I'll stick with the only other option that's available right now - my own full-time job of quietly practicing forgiveness.

I think I finally get it.

You Are Wrong (And I Am Too)

You are wrong:

you are wrong, me too of course, all of us are - we have mistaken our interpretations of each other, the world and all of it's events as the truth. And we are wrong. Our mistake is that we've confused perception for knowledge, falsely believing that what's perceived has an inherent truth and is somehow independent of our own belief system. In other words - we are conveniently ignoring our projections, blaming each other for the divisiveness of the world.

when in truth,

it's all our creation.

here's the way out: we are all responsible for our perceptions, every bit of it, and it's our responsibility to change things. It's an inner job we're faced with, an exploration of consciousness that takes us through a tour of the mind. It's not always pleasant. But it's the only real journey worth taking. And all along the way we're only really doing one thing, continuously, and sincerely...

forgiving our perceptions.

all of them.

until we heal the world.

Complete Awakening

Complete awakening:

it's the metaphysics that largely drop away, that, and any interest in a pursuit of further awakening. I've reached a peaceful point in my life where forgiveness plays the key role, deeply so, and in a way that's very surprising to me - each time that I forgive anything is a complete awakening, a mindful embrace of just this present moment and the innocence found here. I have no interest on if A Course in Miracles is true in any sense other than it continuously reminds me of my function.

I am here to forgive my every false perception.

seeing only my true home.

right here.

now.

Deeper Innocence

Deeper innocence:

these days I have little interest in debate, no wish to discuss metaphysics, nor much use for anything other than my own quite practice of forgiveness. I'm more settled now, there's no frantic search for enlightenment, and little need for life's answers. Slowly, I've eased into a truth that works for me, a promise from lesson 122 of A Course in Miracles stating that forgiveness really does offer everything I need. This is a forgiveness of the selective remembering of holiness, looking past my every perceived wound to the deeper innocence found in every moment.

this forgiveness brings me great peace of  mind.

and that's enough for me right now.

Everything I Want

Everything I want:

forgiveness promises no less than the present moment, a true awareness that here, right now, the past doesn't exist at all aside from the thoughts that continuously draw us back. Lesson 122 of A Course in Miracles tells us that forgiveness offers everything we want, delivering peace, joy, and a sure spiritual awakening. We don't forgive as any sort of action, it's only an acknowledgement of every moment's innocence, repeatedly, until we finally find ourselves in the joy of this awareness.

forgiveness truly offers everything we want.

as nothing exists...

that isn't in this moment.

Deceived

Deceived:

God is with me. I cannot be deceived - this phrase is designed to provide safety from illusions, a reminder that we always have right-minded choice away from ego's projections, and instead extend the voice of love as whispered by the Holy Spirit. These are both but symbols of the mind, and yet one, the Holy Spirit only sees the reality of every situation. So this is how we arrive to a peaceful mind, removing fearful thoughts with a simple reminder that only love is real, being the essence of God, and all else is just an illusion cast forward by the ego. Yes, of course, our waking dream seems terrifyingly real, and the effects of these projections cause an actual world of suffering.

we are certainly deceived.

And yet,

God is with us, right now, and the presence of the Holy Spirit resides within our minds as the only safe and loving option that we can offer. One choice, continuously made, will undo the fearful damage of the ego's world.

there's no longer a reason to be deceived.

God is with us.

we only needed this reminder.

Otherwise

Otherwise:

here's an even simpler plan, a short phrase to keep in mind throughout the ego's commentary for the day - "and God thinks otherwise." That's it, an entire practice in four words, and it serves to bring us through the illusion of our perceptions right to the immediacy of reality. God thinks otherwise because God is not an ego, there's nothing shared between the thought system of the Holy Spirit, which serves as a bridge to the love of God, and the ego, which only has the purpose of perpetuating illusions. So with any thought that seems to hint at separation, every single judgement made, and all of our anger, resentments, grievances towards ourselves and others...

it's simple,

God thinks otherwise.

and we live our lives from here.

Level of the Mind

Level of the mind:

it's a simple practice, really, and no one even has to know that we're engaged in a meaningful exchange of judgement for peace, trading the loud demands of ego for the quiet voice of love. What we're asked to do is to concern ourselves only with the level of the mind, the ultimate cause of every effect, and thus our perception of the world transforms seemingly on its own.

we simply ask for miracles.

continuously so.

Our Only Function

Our only function:

it's a pretty lofty goal, recognizing ourselves as the light of the world and staying faithful only to that purpose. In fact this might sound way to much for us, beyond consideration even, yet A Course in Miracles states unequivocally that this is the reason we are here, and that it's actually easier than imagined, quite natural really - our only purpose is to be the light of the world.

this is the function God assigned us.

to be our truest selves.

and of course this often seems to be the hardest thing for us to do. But this is because we've forgotten who we really are, mistaking ourselves for the littlest image that the ego can imagine and then attempting to enlarge it to the grander vision. This isn't to dismiss the things we do in life, our jobs might be vital in the service of others, or even bring us great joy in their performance. What we do is important, but it's never our true function -

as that belongs to God alone.

so here it is, our function, a simple plan:

continue everything as before, no changes in our lifestyle are really needed, and at every point of darkness, each desolate corner we encounter -  recognize the light of your own original innocence and extend it just a little. That's enough for now. The nature of light is illumination, it doesn't need direction, and there's no question to it's function.

it just shines.

and so do you.

Faithfulness

Faithfulness:

even more so than trust, perhaps faithfulness poses a challenge, to truly know that God's will is love and is playing as a gentle note beneath all conditions - my thoughts still rebel at such a notion. Yet the key to faithfulness is in seeing beneath the surface to a world that doesn't play to the theme of the ego's creation, existing in its primordial innocence. My own faith is increasing through the years, I'm more comfortable in stillness now, allowing the first rushing thoughts of ego to diminish and then seeing my innocence quietly return. I suspect that this will deepen further still, life, and age, will present challenges that seem harsh, ego will prove resilient and crowd my thoughts once more. But this little faith now, so gentle and assuring, will grow stronger as well, larger, and continue to show me a more loving world. Faithfulness is only asking me to look deeper, past the surface, and then trusting what is found.

...and so I do.

a little more each day.

Loving Choices

Loving choices:

of course my most difficult directive is to trust, having faith that I am guided through loving choices, and that my path always leads me to the light of God. I am often lost along this path, or seem to be at least, as sometimes a loving choice takes me further from the things I believe I really need. Therein lies the struggle, sorting through the beliefs that have me clinging to the little things of the world...until I'm finally ready to let go of the littleness and find my way back home.

yet this isn't a journey.

my destination is here, right now,

and I arrive home -

 only though my loving choices.

Alchemy

Alchemy:

of every relationship, and that, indeed, every encounter is instantly a viable means of our our transformation, and that's really their only true purpose. Our goal here is no less than alchemy, that we can take the base form of any relationship, no matter how brief, or seemingly mundane, and use it for the means of experiencing the light existing within each other. The more buried the light, hidden in a depth of our every bias and judgement....the holier our own transformation.

always seek to see the light.

it's our own reflection.
